Today, it snowed. Blankets of pristine snow covered the still-green grass. Winter came early this year. Not that it doesn’t usually snow in mid-November in Ohio. It’s just that today it really snowed. Schools were closed and travel was treacherous. Most Ohioians were disgruntled and grumbling.
But not everyone was cursing the snow.
At 9:30 in the morning, after a probably sleepless night for both of us, I got a text from my friend. She loves winter. She and her girls were dancing with the snow flakes before most had their second cup of coffee. Bundled in hats and coats and boots, with her 8-month-old in the Becco and her five-year-old making snow angels, the three of them basked in Mother Nature’s beauty and welcomed winter with arms wide open.
The picture she sent made me smile. She was so happy. It made me happy to see her happy. Not quite happy enough to run out and join her, mind you.
For a minute I felt badly for not embracing the winter weather and getting my little ones out in it. Then I let it go. Winter and snow and cold – those aren’t for me.
But I knew that feeling. Happiness. Simply happy, touched by something familiar that makes your heart smile.
I feel it when my toes hit the sand, or when my skin is warmed by the sun. It makes my insides sing…every time. So we’re opposite seasons, me and her, but to each their own.
What makes you happy? What makes you want to sing?
